“Top Tier Gasoline” is a label given to gasoline that has passed specific tests for the prevention of intake valve and combustion chamber deposits, and fuel injector and intake valve sticking.
Top Tier Gasoline is THE performance standard for retail gasoline.
Top tier came about after a group of auto manufacturers lobbied the fuel suppliers to establish a higher standard for detergent gasoline. General Motors, Mercedes Benz, Audi, Honda, Toyota, and Volkswagen led the charge.
To quote the Top Tier Gasoline web site, “Since the minimum additive performance standards were first established by EPA in 1995, most gasoline marketers have actually reduced the concentration level of detergent additive in their gasoline by up to 50%.”
Today, with more vehicles resorting to “Direct Fuel Injection” for better performance and more MPG, it’s more important than ever to use a high quality detergent gasoline. The new direct fuel injectors are manufactured to exacting tolerances as they are now subject to combustion chamber pressures, temperatures, and deposits. It’s important to keep them clean for optimum performance.
Even if you are driving a car without direct injection, it pays to keep your regular fuel injectors clean. You’ll be rewarded with better performance and mileage.
